Design Notes
Light is one of nature’s most captivating elements, and its presence has the power to transform a space. In the world of interior design, natural light plays a vital role—not only by enhancing aesthetics but also by elevating the overall atmosphere of a room. It can create dramatic contrasts that bring depth and interest to a space, while also highlighting architectural and design features.
Natural light, when thoughtfully incorporated, makes interiors feel larger, warmer, and more welcoming. At Greenbrook Design, we adopt a design approach known as daylighting—the intentional use of natural light to shape a space’s appearance and ambiance throughout the day. It’s one of our favorite tools in the design process.
Here are just a few reasons why we love incorporating natural light into our projects…
Natural Light and Mood
Light has the ability to influence a person’s mood. More light makes people feel safer and stimulates them to be more productive. This can be particularly beneficial for those who work from home, a trend that is gaining popularity. Working from home often means spending hours indoors, which can have adverse health effects. According to a recent study, it is one of the most important factors people desire to have in their office environment. By incorporating natural light into the office design, you can ensure more productivity in a friendlier environment, which is a big plus for the home office.
Natural Light Versus Artificial
While it is wonderful to have light after dark so we can finish those last-minute projects, natural light has many benefits outside of just being able to see. Natural light is full-spectrum, meaning it contains all the colors of the rainbow, while artificial light can only mimic a few of the colors. We do better healthwise when we are exposed to full sunlight for a portion of the day. Learn more here. Another comparison is the monetary benefits associated with natural light. If laid out correctly, natural light can reduce electricity costs by minimizing the need to use light fixtures during the day. Artificial lights can represent up to 25 to 30% of your electric bill, which is astounding, though some of this cost can be reduced by using different light bulbs. These factors are essential to consider when designing your new space.
Natural Light and Space
Natural light has the remarkable ability to make a room feel more open and expansive—without the need for structural changes. While physically increasing square footage may require remodeling, the perception of space can be significantly enhanced by using the available light effectively.
Strategic design elements, such as well-placed mirrors, can reflect natural light throughout a room, instantly brightening the space and making it appear larger. Large windows and glass doors not only flood interiors with daylight but also create a strong visual connection to the outdoors. This seamless transition between inside and outside helps a room feel airier and more inviting, while also grounding it in its natural surroundings.

Old meets new to create a blend of something beautiful, which is one way to summarize grand millennial style. While minimalism is still a popular trend, many millennials are finding comfort and freedom of expression from their beloved family heritage. Grand millennial is a combination of the new with things of the past, like that old wingback chair from grandma’s attic, and breathing new life into it through reupholstering it. This style also pairs perfectly with many people’s desire to recycle and reduce waste by repurposing existing materials. Let’s unpack this style a little more and find out if it is right for you.
Using smart devices to help manage your home not only makes your life easier. However, many forms of smart home tech also reduce utility usage and improve your home’s carbon footprint. You’ll improve your life and become more eco-friendly all at once! Here’s how to get started:
Health and wellness are a high priority for many today, especially in the home, which is why interior designers are placing a great emphasis on the renovation or remodel plans for the home. Natural light brings a wealth of benefits for your family and also gives the home a beautiful warmth.
