Budgeting For Your Kitchen and Bath

Designing with your budget in mind from the start can help you avoid the need to cut back later in the process. In the building industry, it’s widely recognized that the kitchen and bathrooms are the most influential spaces when it comes to selling a home. However, they’re also among the most expensive areas to renovate. Costs can add up quickly, so every dollar should be spent wisely to ensure a solid return on your investment. Before you start budgeting for your kitchen and bath project, here are some key tips to keep in mind:

Function and Design Must Come First:

When it comes to renovating, one of the most important things to consider is functionality. There’s little value in investing in a space that doesn’t meet your everyday needs. Thoughtful preplanning is essential—consider how you want the space to flow and function. Envision your ideal daily routine and design with that in mind. A well-designed space should make your life easier, not more complicated.

Early in the process, it’s also helpful to decide where you’re willing to invest more and where you can scale back. For example, you may love granite countertops due to their aesthetic appeal. Make that a priority in your design. On the other hand, you may not prioritize high-end appliances, so a top-of-the-line gas range isn’t necessary. By focusing your budget on what truly matters, you may be able to save in other areas without sacrificing the overall design.

There are also smart ways to achieve a high-end look without the high-end price tag. If expensive countertop materials aren’t a priority, consider using high-quality laminates that mimic the appearance of natural stone. Another cost-saving tip: a simple subway tile backsplash can feel elevated when laid in a herringbone pattern, adding interest without significantly increasing costs.

In short, don’t let your budget completely dictate your design—but let it guide you. Prioritize what’s important to you, be strategic, and remember that thoughtful choices can lead to beautiful results.

Make Your New Space Memorable:

The saying “You never get a second chance to make a first impression” holds especially true in the world of interior design. A well-designed space should immediately convey warmth, personality, and intentionality the moment someone walks through the door. Establishing an emotional connection with a space not only enhances comfort for those who live there, but also creates a welcoming atmosphere for guests.

Small, personalized design elements can make a lasting impact. Incorporating meaningful details—such as globally inspired accents for those who enjoy travel—adds character and depth. Statement pieces, like decorative cabinet hardware or an eye-catching light fixture, can serve as elegant focal points and elevate the overall aesthetic without overwhelming the space.

Explore our resources to discover the perfect style for you. The things that we love to surround ourselves with make us love our home, and by budgeting for kitchen and bath projects, we can ensure there is enough room for everything.

Keep Storage Flexibility In Mind When Planning:

In today’s fast-paced, multitasking world, it’s more important than ever for home design to accommodate a variety of needs. Spaces—especially in kitchens and living areas—must support multiple functions, making adaptability a key consideration in the planning process.

At Greenbrook Design, flexibility is built into every project. Adjustable shelving is a standard feature in any cabinet not specifically designed with drawers or pullouts. This allows homeowners to easily reconfigure their storage, whether it’s immediately after move-in or several years later. Clients consistently appreciate the convenience and long-term value of this kind of thoughtful design.

Modern households are also increasingly multigenerational, requiring spaces that are accessible to users of all ages and abilities. Prioritizing universal design features—such as adjustable storage, accessible heights, and easy-to-navigate layouts—not only enhances everyday functionality but also ensures that the home remains comfortable and usable as needs evolve over time.

Avoid Using The “Flavor Of The Month”:

When redesigning a space—especially with future resale in mind—it’s wise to prioritize timeless, transitional elements over overly specific or extreme design statements.

Transitional design strikes a balance between classic and contemporary styles, offering flexibility that appeals to a broad audience. For instance, while some homeowners may favor ornate moldings and traditional detailing, others may find those features dated. Conversely, ultra-minimalist contemporary designs in monochrome palettes can be perceived as cold or impersonal by some buyers.

Neutral colors and versatile finishes tend to have the widest appeal and are less likely to become outdated. As an example, a bold shade like Pantone’s 2017 Color of the Year, “Greenery,” may be striking in small doses—but using it as the dominant color for all your cabinetry could make future resale more challenging.

Before finalizing design decisions, consider asking a few key questions:
• Will this still feel fresh and appealing in 5 or 10 years?
• Could this choice be polarizing to future buyers?
• Am I truly drawn to this design, or is it simply a passing trend being marketed heavily?

Taking the time to evaluate design choices through a long-term lens can help ensure a space feels both personal and enduring—while maintaining broad market appeal. See one of our projects featuring designer white kitchen cabinets for a client.

Get The Most “Bang For Your Buck” By Ideally Configuring Your Cabinetry:

One of the most effective ways to optimize your kitchen or bathroom renovation is by using custom cabinetry. Unlike stock or semi-custom options, custom cabinets are built to precise specifications—utilizing every possible ¼ inch of available space. This approach eliminates the need for fillers, ensuring that both the full height and width of the room are used effectively. You can see many custom storage solutions in the Walker Woodworking photo gallery.

At Greenbrook Design, our process begins with a personalized consultation. The design team takes the time to understand how you use your space, then develops a layout that is explicitly tailored to your needs and lifestyle. Partnering with Walker Woodworking, we offer a wide range of innovative storage solutions designed to maximize function. We also make a point to eliminate inefficient “dead corners” in our cabinetry layouts, ensuring every inch works for you.

These thoughtful design strategies are just a few reasons why custom cabinetry is a valuable investment—and something to consider when budgeting for your kitchen or bath project.

When you’re ready to begin planning, our team is here to help. Greenbrook Design offers a comprehensive budget analysis—a planning worksheet and guide that uses real-world figures to help you make informed decisions early in the process. The more you prepare upfront, the smoother your project will be—and the fewer surprises you’ll face along the way.

Telling Your Story Your Way: Blending Culture with Interior Design

Life, Styled

At the heart of any design work is the chance to tell a story—the story of those who live there. Our home is at the core of who we are. It is our grounding, the place we can truly let our hair down and be ourselves. It’s where memories are not just made, but remembered and passed down to the next generation. Homes are meant to be special—a symbol to all who enter of what truly matters to us. That’s why the design choices we make should be influenced by who we are, where we came from, and how our unique experiences shape us. Across the world, people’s design choices are deeply rooted in culture. But in today’s ever-connected world, we’re also seeing a beautiful blending of cultures—where traditional elements mix with modern influences, and regional styles merge to reflect global inspirations.

New Year, New Trends, New Lights: Home Lighting Trends for 2022

Design Notes

Since the invention of the light bulb, we have been able to brighten up our homes at any time of day. It has been great to eliminate shadows in areas where there are limited windows or even none at all, and allowed us to achieve more in a 24-hour period. Light fixtures have also developed from being just a practical tool into works of art, giving homeowners the chance to express themselves and add a touch of elegance to any room. Changing out a light fixture can completely alter or transform a room, and with so many sizes and styles, it can be hard to know which one is right for you. As we approach the close of another year, new home lighting trends for 2022 could provide helpful information for selecting your next light fixture that will perfectly illuminate your home.

A Place At The Table: Dining Room Design Tips

Life, Styled

Every area of the home has a purpose, a specific role to play in running a house smoothly, whether that is the living room where we relax or the bathroom where we get ready for the day. The kitchen is a place of preparation, the space where we go to cook for our family, but it is the dining room where it is served and enjoyed. This is the space within the home that gives families a designated area to gather around and dine together, as well as for activities like homework, bills, and fun things like family game night. It is a multifunctional space, which means it deserves some extra attention when selecting decor pieces. Let’s talk about the many elements you can use to give the dining room the love and beauty it deserves.

Choose What You Love: What is Mixology Interior Design?

Design Notes

The world of interior design has run the full gamut of trends, from minimal to over-the-top and back again. Your home is meant to be your happy place, and a good design can affect the atmosphere. There are multiple styles to choose from, including modern, traditional, farmhouse, and transitional. Each possesses characteristics that make them unique in their own way, but sometimes what is offered is not enough, which is where the term mixology comes in, and no, we are not referring to the mixing of cocktails. There is a beauty when mixing and matching design styles, cabinets, and furnishings to create a space that perfectly reflects you. For a long time, designers were taught that things needed to remain within a certain realm of style in order for them to look good, but over the past few years, those boundaries have been broken down to make way for homeowners to express themselves in their own way. Out of this, there have been some new terms used to describe the shift in styles, such as grand millennial. If you like a few elements from multiple styles, then mixology may be your new best friend.
