Historic Remodel – Salisbury, NC
Objective:
To accept the structural challenges of this 1912 Spanish Mission home and design a stunning yet functional kitchen space while preserving many of the original historic elements, and even hiding a few!
Kitchen Perimeter
Perimeter: Benjamin Moore – Snowfall
Build Method: Inset
Where does the family gather?
In general, the kitchen is the main hub of the home, the gathering spot. For this family, it was no different; it was meaningful to create the new “living area” (aka kitchen) for this couple. Making the home a hospitable center for family and friends, just as it was done in the era of the 1900s.
Wishlist:
After gutting the kitchen, removing one of the six doors, and adding another entry to the foyer, we now have a blank canvas upon which to create a kitchen masterpiece. On the wish list was a large center island to seat four comfortably, a decorative range hood complete with corbels, and designing a hutch to hide the existing original pot belly stove fireplace. Yes, you read that correctly; we are hiding a fireplace!
Kitchen Island
This historic kitchen remodel blends classic craftsmanship with modern convenience. Inset cabinetry reinforces the home’s traditional character, finished in a smooth, painted satin finish. The island and custom hood, painted in Sherwin-Williams Porpoise, anchor the space with depth and contrast. Thoughtful details include a microwave drawer, a hammered sink in the island, appliance panels, and peg divider drawers, seamlessly integrating functionality while preserving a timeless aesthetic.
Unique Features
Features of the Remodel
-
Corbels flank each side of the custom bell-shaped hood, finished in a beautiful contrasting color that highlights its architectural presence.
-
Glass cabinet doors were designed to mimic the era of the home, carefully matching the original window pane pattern.

A standout feature is the custom cabinet concealing the existing fireplace, crafted with shallow depth and mirrored glass doors with mullions to seamlessly blend with the home’s historic details.
