Historic Campbell Building

Constructed in 1927, Campbell’s was Shelby’s largest department store and remained in operation through 1955. The rehabilitation of this prominent three-story corner building in the Central Shelby Historic District has transformed the building into a residential design showroom on the ground floor and mezzanine, a special events venue on the second floor, and a residence on the third floor.

Revitalization of the Campbell Building – Venue and apartment loft

Objective: By incorporating the reclaimed wood from the historic Campbell building, we were able to preserve the historic roots of this landmark and remain true to the spirit of the past.

The historic Campbell building has served many purposes in its 100 years of existence here in Shelby, NC, including a department store and furniture store. Now it is home to the beautiful venue known as Uptown Indigo. (Steeples Bar)

The top floor is a bar and lounge space cleverly deemed “Steeples” for the number of churches you can see from the windows. The original floors, tin ceilings, and exposed brick walls are a designer’s dream. Throw in the stunning mountain views from the rooftop terrace, and you may never want to leave.

Q & A with the owners~

How did the idea of using reclaimed wood for the bar and powder room area happen?

I wanted to reuse everything we could in the Campbell Building refurbishment, from the original 1927 doors to the old woodwork. When we planned the rooftop terrace, we had to go through the roof, where we saw the old wood and how it had aged beautifully. I wanted to reuse it in any way possible. We wanted the Steeples Bar to be more masculine, and the old hardwoods had an excellent rustic appeal.

Apartment Loft

Objective: To create a modern loft, a space for loft living and working that incorporates high ceilings, expansive windows, and an open functional plan that does not obstruct the natural beauty of the historic Campbell building.

Cathedral Arched Wet Bar

This space needed to be multi-functional. The owner had a few specific requirements, including a wet bar in the personal living area of the loft. The design of the arched bar area was conceived from the many window views in the space. The cathedral-arched frame is the perfect statement piece in this wet bar, complemented by the granite backdrop.

Owner’s testimony~

“Using Walker Woodworking / Greenbrook Design for all of our cabinetry, including two full bars, a kitchen, five bathrooms, and one wet bar, was one of the best construction decisions we made during the refurbishing of the Campbell Building.”Owners: Cliff & Angela Franklin

Kitchen

Capturing a vintage feel while adding a modern twist, the rustic industrial style seen here gives these homeowners and their guests a connection to the past that is hard to overlook.

Loft apartments have always been popular and they seem to require a particular type of styled kitchen.

This loft space has embraced the industrial feel with original exposed tin ceilings. The polish of the granite wall and the sleek, matching granite countertops provide a welcome contrast in this industrial modern kitchen. Adding the elements of natural wood drawers inside the island is just one of the distinguished statement pieces inside the historic building apartment loft space.

Q & A with the owners~

What were your 3 top wish list items for the kitchen area?

We had a couple of priorities for the kitchen area. 1) That it made guests to the Steeples Event Venue feel like they were at home. 2) That there was a big island so my two daughters and daughter-in-law can cook together without running into each other. 3) That the long sink in the island could be used in multiple ways while also appearing modern and beautiful with the rest of the big open space.

Master and Jack & Jill

Q & A with the owners~

What was your inspiration for going so bold with the color?

“I love color—especially blues and greens. I stayed with grey, black, and silver most everywhere in the building but really wanted to put some personality in the bathroom for our family to enjoy. That deep green color is my happy color!”‘
