What is a cabinet design consultation?
Every project starts with listening, and with the right information. For home remodels — including kitchen remodels, bathroom remodels, laundry remodels, and more — accurate measurements are the foundation of a great design and a smooth installation. A design consultation is where we get to know you: your goals, your style, your timeline, and your budget. Before we ever talk cabinets, we talk about you.
Do you charge for an initial measurement visit?
Yes. For most remodel projects (especially when you don’t have construction plans with dimensions), Greenbrook Design charges a $150 commitment fee for an initial on-site measurement visit; a discount is applied with acceptable drawings. This reserves professional designer time, typically about an hour, and occasionally longer depending on the space, and allows us to design and price your cabinetry based on real measurements, not guesses.
Why is there a $150 commitment fee for measurements?
Remodel spaces often have real-world conditions that affect cabinetry design (walls that aren’t perfectly square, tight clearances, existing openings, appliance placement, and more). The commitment fee covers the time it takes to carefully measure and document what we need, ensuring your layout, cabinet sizing, and pricing are accurate from the start.
Is the $150 measurement fee credited back if we move forward?
No. The $150 is a commitment fee for the measurement visit and reflects the professional time required to properly measure and document your space.
When do I need an on-site measurement visit vs. using plans?
If you have construction plans with clear dimensions (common in new construction), we can often begin with a design consultation using those plans and confirm final measurements later when the site is ready. If you’re remodeling and don’t have dimensioned plans, an on-site measurement visit is typically the best first step
How long does a kitchen or bath measurement visit take?
Most measurement visits take about 1 hour, but depending on the size and complexity of the project, they can take longer (occasionally up to a part of a day of designer time). We plan enough time to measure carefully and avoid surprises later.
What happens after the measurement visit?
Once we have accurate measurements, we can move forward with design options that fit your space, align cabinetry selections with your goals and budget, and provide pricing that’s grounded in real dimensions.
Can you give me a cabinet quote without measuring first?
We can share general budget ranges, but accurate cabinetry pricing depends heavily on layout, dimensions, and the level of customization. For remodels without plans, we recommend starting with a measurement visit, so your design and quote are based on real measurements. Not rough estimates.
What should I have ready before the measurement visit?
If possible, have any inspiration photos, notes on what you want to change (or keep), and basic appliance information (especially refrigerator, range, and dishwasher specs) if available. You don’t need to have everything figured out — that’s what we’re here for. The more context you can share, the more productive the visit will be.
Do you offer cabinet design consultations near Charlotte, NC?
Yes — Greenbrook Design serves homeowners and builders throughout the greater Charlotte area and western North Carolina. Our showroom is located in downtown Shelby, NC, roughly an hour from Charlotte, and our designers regularly work with clients across a two-hour service radius — including Banner Elk, NC, and parts of South Carolina. If you’re looking for a kitchen cabinet designer near you in the Charlotte region, we’d love to connect.
What’s the difference between a design consultation and a measurement visit?
A design consultation is a conversation — we learn about your goals, style preferences, budget, and timeline. A measurement visit is a site visit where a certified designer physically measures your kitchen, bathroom, or other space. For remodels without construction plans, these often happen together. For new construction, we typically start with a design consultation using your architect’s plans and schedule measurements when the site is ready.
How do I prepare for my first kitchen remodel consultation?
The more context you bring, the more productive the conversation. We recommend gathering:
- A Pinterest board or saved inspiration photos
- Your appliance specs (especially refrigerator, range, and dishwasher)
- A rough sense of your budget range
- Any ideas about what you want to keep or change
You don’t need everything figured out — that’s exactly why we start by listening.
What cabinet lines do you carry?
We offer eight curated cabinet lines at Greenbrook Design, ranging from our flagship Walker Woodworking custom cabinetry (fully custom, 8–10 weeks) to semi-custom and stock options including Fabuwood, Cabico, Metropolitan Woodworks, Shamrock, NatureKast, and Stoll for outdoor kitchens. We also carry James Martin for bath-focused, pre-configured vanities with 48-hour ship times. During your consultation, we’ll help you identify which line best fits your style, timeline, and budget.
How much do kitchen cabinets cost?
Kitchen cabinetry at Greenbrook Design typically ranges from $30,000 to $90,000 depending on the cabinet line, room size, and level of customization. Bathroom cabinetry projects often run $3,000 to $20,000. We’re happy to discuss general budget ranges before committing to a measurement visit, so you can be confident we’re a good fit first.
Do you work with contractors and builders, or only homeowners?
Both. About 40% of our clients are builders, contractors, and high-end design firms — particularly in the Charlotte and Banner Elk, NC areas. We understand builder timelines and can coordinate cabinetry for new construction and large-scale projects. Reach out to discuss your project type and we’ll tailor the consultation accordingly.
What is your design process after the consultation?
We follow a structured 7-step design process. After your measurement visit and initial consultation, we develop design options tailored to your space, walk you through cabinet selections and layouts, and provide accurate pricing. Most remodel projects are completed in 2–3 months from design approval; new construction timelines vary based on when the site is ready. You’ll have a dedicated designer with you every step of the way.
Are your designers certified?
Our team includes NKBA-credentialed designers, including Taylor Walker, named to the NKBA Thirty Under 30 Class of 2025. Greenbrook Design has also been recognized with the NKBA Innovative Showroom Award and the Wood Diamond Award for kitchens over $50,000. Expertise and attention to detail are at the core of every project we take on.
Can I visit your showroom before scheduling a consultation?
Absolutely. Our design center showroom on Lafayette Street in downtown Shelby, NC is open for walk-in visits. You’ll see examples from our cabinet lines alongside countertops, tile, lighting, and window treatments — all in one place. Many clients find it helpful to visit first to get a feel for styles and finishes before their formal consultation.
What cabinet lines are best for different budgets?
Our eight cabinet lines span a wide range of investment levels:
- Most accessible: Fabuwood — stock sizing with good, better, and best options; the fastest lead times
- Mid-range semi-custom: Cabico, Metropolitan Woodworks, Shamrock, NatureKast — more customization with moderate lead times
- Fully custom: Walker Woodworking — built to your exact specifications with an 8–10 week lead time and the highest level of personalization
We’ll walk you through all the options during your consultation so you never feel like you’re guessing
Do you handle installation?
Yes. Greenbrook Design manages cabinetry design and installation as part of a complete project. For clients outside our primary service area, we can deliver cabinets and coordinate with a local installer. Travel and overnight install costs are included in the project price — no surprise fees. We have a separate line item for installation in case homeowners or contractors want to handle it.
