Custom Cabinet Lighting Design Guide

Plan, coordinate, and design your LED cabinet lighting with Greenbrook Design.

Why Cabinet Lighting Matters

Cabinet lighting adds warmth, dimension, and functionality to your design. Whether you choose bright LED lights under the cabinets or subtle puck lights inside glass displays, lighting significantly transforms the appearance and ambiance of cabinetry.

At Greenbrook Design, we assist you in planning every lighting detail from the beginning of the process. This ensures that your cabinetry arrives ready for lighting installation, whether it comes from Walker Woodworking or from our other cabinet lines that integrate lighting.

Our Role at Greenbrook Design

  • Help you decide where lighting adds the most value—task, ambient, or accent.
  • Coordinate with Walker Woodworking to ensure your cabinetry is routed and prepped for lighting.
  • Provide detailed design plans showing lighting locations and extrusion channels.
  • Guide communication between you, your builder, and your licensed electrician.

What You & Your Electrician Provide

To complete the lighting successfully, the homeowner, builder and electrician are responsible for:

  • Lighting Selection
Fixture type (LED tape, linear bar, puck, etc.), output level, color temperature, CRI, diffuser type, and smart/dimmer controls.
  • Electrical Planning & Code Compliance
Driver/transformer selection, power supply location, wire routing, switching/control wiring, and final testing.
  • Final Installation
Fitting lighting into the channels, securing wiring, and verifying performance after cabinetry and countertops are installed.

We are happy to coordinate dimensions and layout with your electrician.

How to Order Lighting-Ready Cabinets

  1. Discuss lighting options with your Greenbrook Design cabinet designer early in the project.
  2. Select locations—under-cabinet, in-cabinet, or floating shelf.
  3. Consult your electrician to finalize fixture type, wattage, and driver placement.
  4. Provide extrusion samples if you’re using custom lighting profiles.
  5. Approve final design drawings before cabinetry goes into production.

If you have a lighting idea, we can likely route for it—just involve us early.

Walker Woodworking’s Role

Once your design is finalized, Walker Woodworking:

  • Performs precision routing for LED channels in cabinetry and floating shelves.
  • Provides aluminum extrusions only (available in silver or black).
  • Can route for puck lights and other lighting formats with provided samples.
  • Offers standard channel profiles or can match custom extrusions with a physical sample.
  • Prepares cabinetry for installation by your electrician—Walker does not supply or install the lighting itself.

LED Cabinet Lighting & Puck Light Options

Walker Woodworking can prep cabinetry for both linear LED tape lighting and puck lighting. Floating shelves, hutches, or display cabinets can also be routed for hidden lighting channels to create a seamless, custom look.

We typically recommend LED lighting for its long lifespan, low heat output, and flexibility in color temperature and brightness.

Important: Walker Woodworking provides routing and extrusion prep only. Lighting fixtures, wiring, and power components must be selected and installed by your electrician.

FAQ’s

  1. Do you supply the actual lights?
No. We supply the routed channels and extrusions only. Your electrician supplies and installs the lighting and power components.
  2. Can you match a specific extrusion profile?
Yes—if you provide a physical sample before production so we can verify fit and tooling.
  3. Where should the driver/transformer go?
Your electrician will determine size and location. Common placements include utility spaces, pantry cabinets, or a ventilated equipment cabinet.
  4. Will routing be visible?
We route to minimize visibility. Sightlines depend on diffuser style and electrician placement.
  5. Can you pre-drill wire access holes?
Yes. We can coordinate chase routes based on your electrician’s wiring plan.
  6. What if lighting choices change after the cabinets are built?
Most lighting products require specific channel widths. Changing after fabrication may require modifications or may not be possible—confirm early.
