Kitchen Remodel Costs: What to Expect in the Charlotte & Western NC Market

Why kitchen remodel pricing feels confusing

Most sticker shock comes from comparing projects that aren’t actually comparable.

A “kitchen remodel” might mean:

  • Replacing cabinets and counters only
  • Keeping the same layout vs moving plumbing/walls
  • Swapping a range vs going full luxury appliance package
  • Cosmetic updates vs a true down-to-the-studs renovation

So let’s break it down in a way that’s easier to plan.

If you’ve been on Instagram lately, you’ve probably seen bold price ranges for “minor,” “mid-range,” and “high-end” kitchen renovations. One recent Reel pegged a minor kitchen renovation at $75,000–$100,000, mid-range at $100,000–$200,000, and high-end at $200,000+, and the comments lit up.

Here’s the truth: those numbers can be accurate in many situations, and they can also feel wildly out of reach, because “kitchen remodel cost” depends on what’s included, what level of cabinetry you choose, and where you live.

This guide is written for homeowners in Shelby, the greater Charlotte area, and Western North Carolina who want realistic expectations and a clearer way to budget.

Two Types of Kitchen Investments Homeowners Should Understand

One of the biggest misconceptions we see is homeowners trying to compare every kitchen project the same way. When in reality, not every remodel includes the same scope of work.

At Greenbrook Design, we typically help clients fall into one of two categories: a cabinetry-focused kitchen transformation or a full-scale kitchen remodel.

Understanding the difference early on makes budgeting feel much more manageable and realistic.

1. A Cabinetry-Focused Kitchen Transformation

For many homeowners, cabinetry is the heart of the kitchen. It’s what defines the functionality, storage, flow, and overall aesthetic of the space.

This type of investment is ideal for clients who want a dramatic visual and functional upgrade without completely reconstructing the room.

These projects often include:

  • Cabinet design and space planning
  • Semi-custom or custom cabinetry
  • Countertops
  • Decorative hardware
  • Storage accessories and organizational features
  • Cabinet installation (depending on project scope)

Depending on the home and goals, clients may choose to keep existing flooring, appliances, lighting, or plumbing locations to help prioritize where the investment goes.

One of the biggest factors in this category is the type of cabinetry selected.

In the Shelby area, many homeowners opt for semi-custom cabinetry for its flexibility and value. In Charlotte, NC and much of Western North Carolina, we often see more fully custom projects that include specialty storage, furniture-style details, built-ins, and highly tailored layouts.

Neither approach is “better”; it simply depends on how customized you want the space to feel and function.

2. A Full Kitchen Remodel

This is the larger, all-inclusive renovation most people picture when they hear the phrase “full kitchen remodel.”

These projects typically combine cabinetry and design with construction, finish selections, and multiple trades working together to completely transform the space.

A full remodel may include:

  • Cabinetry and installation
  • Countertops
  • Flooring
  • Tile backsplash
  • Plumbing fixtures
  • Lighting and electrical updates
  • Appliance packages
  • Painting and trim work
  • Layout modifications
  • Project coordination and management

This is where budgets can vary significantly because structural and mechanical changes quickly impact overall cost.

For example, relocating plumbing, removing walls, changing appliance locations, or upgrading electrical systems can dramatically shift the investment range, even before finishes are selected.

That’s why two kitchens that appear similar online may have completely different budgets behind the scenes.

Why the comments section is so divided

The Reel’s ranges sparked two consistent reactions:

  • “Finally—realistic numbers.” Some homeowners and pros said they share these ranges with clients because they match what they’re seeing.
  • “That’s excessive—there has to be a way under $50K.” Others argued most kitchens shouldn’t cost that much.

Both can be true.

One designer in the comments shared that a “normal” kitchen (two walls of cabinets + an island) received cabinet quotes ranging $35K–$60K for cabinets alone in their market. Another commenter pointed out that in some higher-end projects, $50K may not even cover the cost of appliances.

On the flip side, some homeowners shared lower totals by:

  • Keeping the layout
  • Choosing value-focused appliance brands
  • Simplifying finishes
  • Doing some labor themselves

The takeaway: your final number depends on your scope, your selections, and your location.

A practical way to budget (without guessing)

If you want a realistic plan, start with these steps:

  1. Define your scope
  • Cabinets only? Or full remodel?
  • Keeping layout? Or changing it?
  1. Choose your cabinetry tier early
  • Semi-custom vs custom is one of the biggest budget levers.
  1. Decide where you want to “splurge.”
  • Appliances? Statement lighting? Specialty storage? A standout hood?
  1. Build an allowance list
  • Appliances, plumbing fixtures, tile, lighting—these categories can vary widely.
  1. Plan for the real-world stuff
  • Older homes can require surprises: leveling floors, updating electrical systems, addressing ventilation issues, or adjusting framing.
