“Beautiful millwork, ornate plaster, inlaid floors and decorative windows were all to be restored and we needed a kitchen to match these beautiful features.” stated, Sherry Beck homeowner.

Homeowners, first met Travis at the Southern Living Show in Charlotte, NC. Sherry quickly learned from the displays on the floor, that the cabinets, finishes and quality spoke for themselves. A trip to Shelby, to tour the cabinet shop and see the manufacturing side of Walker Woodworking cabinets convinced Mrs. Beck she was making the right decision.

Designer’s Challenge:

This project had several challenges, but the largest challenge was to hide the existing chimney that was once used for the pot belly stove. Most of my designs involve opening up a space, this one was just the opposite.

Greenbrook Quote:

“This project was a reflection of my ability to build a relationship with a client who had a very specific set of expectations. And combining the clients expectations and with my expertise in kitchen design we were able to put together a kitchen that not only brought modern functionality and updated aesthetic beauty but stay true to the historic at integrity of the home.”

Where does the family gather?

In general, the kitchen is the main hub of the home, the gathering spot.  For this family, it was no different, it was meaningful to create the new “living area” (aka kitchen) for this couple. Making the home a hospitable center for family and friends just as it was done in the era of the 1900’s.

Wishlist:

After gutting the kitchen, removing one of the six doors, and adding another entry to the foyer, we now have a blank canvas upon which to create a kitchen masterpiece.  On the wish list was a large center island to seat four comfortably, a decorative range hood complete with corbels, and designing a hutch to hide the existing original pot belly stove fireplace. Yes, you read that correctly, we are hiding a fireplace!

Homeowners Questions & Answers:

Did you research other cabinet companies?

YES – We did, we researched and have used other cabinet companies in previous homes, but we were most impressed with the quality of Walker Woodworking cabinets.

What were your 3 “Must haves” in this renovation?

  1. Use existing 100 year old cabinet doors.
  2. Disguising a chimney
  3. Adding a pantry

Is this your forever home?

Probably not –

How many people live in the home?

2

Do you entertain?

Yes – regularly

How has the new kitchen design helped you entertain better?

We love the bar and we are more organized.

What was the biggest hurdle you had to overcome?

Timing – but I must be clear – not on your part, you guys worked so well with all of our delays.

What is the best feature or biggest asset to your new kitchen?

That would have to be the cabinet surrounding the chimney. It’s perfect in every way!
