A Touch of Brass and Walnut

walnut kitchen island with bar stools in white kitchen with floating shelves

Brass hardware and walnut wood are the latest design trends; this kitchen clearly shows why! They complement each other well and blend beautifully with multiple styles and color palettes. This home underwent an amazing kitchen and master bathroom transformation. The focal point of the kitchen is the stunning walnut custom island, but the satin brass hardware adds just the right pop to the light cabinets. Quarter sawn white oak is definitely the main highlight to the master bathroom, the warm tones make the space inviting and relaxing. Everything about this home says, “Come in and make yourself comfortable.”

Kitchen

Objective: To create a space with sufficient storage while being instrumental for family gatherings and entertaining, including seating at the island.

Contrast is a great design element used to create a focal point and a statement, and this kitchen is a perfect example of that. Walnut is a beautiful wood, and it is showcased perfectly on this island, which comfortably seats four. The kitchen perimeter was designed to utilize the space there cleverly, and by thinking outside the box, more space was found by building custom cabinets to fit inside the bay window. Many people enjoy having their sink by the window, but we also placed the dishwasher and a trash can pull out there for added convenience. A pair of pocket doors along one wall of cabinets enables the homeowners to store larger items, such as the coffee maker, within easy reach but keep them out of sight. Adding a utensil divider and dish pegs to one of the drawers helps to keep this family organized. The floating walnut shelves add depth to the wall and warmth to the overall look and feel of the space. This two-toned kitchen has many beautiful features that create a unified and functional design.

Master Bathroom

Objective:  To design a master bathroom where the homeowners could relax and that was functional for their lifestyle.

The master bathroom is not only a retreat but should be tailored to the needs of the homeowners. For this design, a walk-in shower was the priority, and the layout was created around that. The quarter-sawn white oak adds warmth to the space and is highly functional at the same time. Polished nickel was the hardware finish of choice and paired perfectly with the oak. Two vanities, so each person can have their area with multiple drawers for storing their items.

Q & A with the Interior Designer

What was the main objective in changing the kitchen floor plan?

The existing kitchen was obstructed by a half wall and was not conducive to entertaining friends and family gatherings. The homeowners wanted to open up the space and create a one-of-a-kind look. They wanted the appliances to disappear and the island to mimic a table so the whole family could sit and enjoy a meal together.

Were there any obstacles to overcome in the design?

Yes, since the space was narrow and long, we had to get creative with the design. Also, we wanted to keep the beautiful bay windows, so we decided to float the countertop over them to save them.

What is your favorite feature?

The walnut island, wood finish, and fluting turned out better than we could have imagined. It took a lot of tweaking, but it turned out perfect!

How was it working with Walker Woodworking?

I have worked on a few jobs with Walker Woodworking, and they are truly a custom cabinet company. They also have an in-house design team that helps put it all together. They can really do almost anything you want, and this kitchen proves it.
How was the installation phase of the project?

This project had some existing cabinets, which required the install team to blend the old with the new seamlessly. They went out of their way to ensure everything was installed correctly and to the homeowner’s satisfaction.
