The historic Campbell building has served many purposes in it’s 100 years of existence here in Shelby, NC including a department store and furniture store. Now it is the home and business of another Shelby family. Loft apartments have always been popular and they seem to require a particular type of styled kitchen. This loft space has embraced the industrial feel with original tin exposed ceilings. The polish of the granite wall and the sleek matching granite countertops, provides a welcome contrast in this industrial modern kitchen. Adding the elements of natural wood drawers inside the island are just one of the distinguished statement pieces inside the historic building apartment loft space.

Apartment Loft

Objective: To create a modern loft, a space for loft living and working that incorporates high ceilings, expansive windows, and an open functional plan that does not obstruct the natural beauty of the historic Campbell building.

This space needed to be multi-functional. The homeowner had a few specific requirements, including a wet bar in the personal living area of the loft. The design of the arched bar area was conceived from the many window views in the space. The Cathedral Arched frame is the perfect statement piece in this wet bar with the granite backdrop.

Q & A with Building Owners

1. How did the idea of using the reclaimed wood for the bar and powder room area happen?

I wanted to reuse everything we could in the Campbell Building refurbishment, from the original 1927 doors to the old wood work. When we planned the rooftop terrace we had to go through the roof where we saw the old wood and how it had aged beautifully. I wanted to re-use it in any way possible. We wanted the Steeples Bar to be more masculine and the old hard-woods had an excellent rustic appeal.

2. What was your 3 top wish list items for the kitchen area?

We had a couple priorities for the kitchen area. 1) That it made guests to the Steeples Event Venue feel like they were at home. 2) That there was a big island so my two daughters and daughter-in-law can cook together without running into each other. 3) That the long sink in the island could be used in multiple ways, while also appearing modern and beautiful with the rest of the big open space.

3. The Jack and Jill bathroom is just beautiful in color, what was your inspiration in going so bold with the color?

I love color- especially blues and greens. I stayed with grey, black, and silver most everywhere in the building but just really wanted to put some personality in that bathroom for our family to enjoy. That deep green color is my happy color!

4. Was there anything you would have done differently now that it is all done?

I would have put a bigger wet bar in our apartment. You can never have too much storage for your beverages!

5. How was your experience with the designer? Installers?

Greenbrook is WONDERFUL- truly cannot say enough. There were times that I had picked out something then went home and thought about it and then told them my idea and they just rolled right with me. They gave me some important boundaries they have learned from experience, but at the same time worked hard at making the ideas in my head a reality (like our secret door to our storage room). They made suggestions knowing what I would NEED, not just the aesthetic that I wanted. So glad they lead us in the right direction with each and every cabinet design throughout the building.
